Pauchle Saorsa - A Metal Unicorn by Duncan Hutchinson

In October 2024, Click Metal proudly announced Duncan Hutchinson as the winner of our 'Metal Project' photo competition. His extraordinary creation, a stainless-steel unicorn named Pauchle Saorsa (meaning "a small parcel of freedom" a mixture of Scots and Gaelic), captured hearts and showcased the remarkable creativity within the metalworking community.

The Journey of Pauchle Saorsa

Duncan's passion for metal fabrication isn't new. He previously crafted a stainless steel heron, now perched overlooking the bay in his hometown of Lochinver. (See photo). When a friend asked him about his next project, Duncan's response was simple yet ambitious: "I've upped the ante!" That declaration set the stage for Pauchle Saorsa, a project that would combine his technical skills and love for storytelling.

The unicorn, crafted entirely from scrap stainless steel scavenged over time, is a homage to Scotland's national animal. Unicorns have long been symbols of Scottish identity, appearing on the country's coat of arms during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots in the mid-1500s. With this historical inspiration, Duncan brought Pauchle Saorsa to life as a modern emblem of Scottish pride and creativity.

A Symbol of Freedom and Independence

In 2023, Duncan took Pauchle Saorsa on an inspiring journey to the South of Scotland for the Chain of Freedom event, a human chain that stretched across the country in support of Scottish independence. The unicorn became a symbol of hope and unity, culminating in a memorable moment when Lesley Riddoch, a respected journalist, filmmaker, and author, cut the chains to "release" the unicorn, marking the end of the event.

Sustainability in Sculpture

One of the most remarkable aspects of Duncan's work is his commitment to sustainability. Every piece of Pauchle Saorsa was crafted from repurposed stainless steel, showcasing how creativity and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. This approach not only highlights Duncan's resourcefulness but also aligns with modern values of reducing waste and embracing eco-conscious artistry.

Inspiration for the Metalworking Community

Duncan's work exemplifies the endless possibilities within metal fabrication. From drawing inspiration from Scotland's rich history to incorporating sustainable practices, Pauchle Saorsa is more than just a sculpture, it's a story, a statement, and a symbol of freedom.

Click Metal is proud to celebrate Duncan's achievements and hopes his story inspires other metalworkers to push boundaries, embrace their creativity, and bring their visions to life.
